Tell someone there are pink dolphins ninety minutes from Koh Samui and you'll get the same skeptical look every time. We understand β it sounds like a marketing invention. But the pink dolphins of Khanom are wild, resident and very real, and going to meet them is one of the most quietly magical days you can have from Samui. It's also one of the least known, which is exactly why we love it.
Yes, actually pink
The animals are Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis). They're born dark grey and lose pigment as they mature, until many adults turn pale β and the pink you see isn't pigment at all. It's blood flow beneath thin skin, the same way a face flushes: the more active and warm the dolphin, the rosier it glows. A small population lives permanently in the calm, food-rich bay off Khanom, following the tides and the fishing boats they've learned to work alongside.
Where is Khanom β and when to go
Khanom is a sleepy fishing district on the mainland coast, just south of Donsak where the Samui ferries land. No high-rises, no beach clubs β just long, empty sand and a working harbour. Because the dolphins are residents, not migrants, there's no season to chase: they can be seen all year round. Calm mornings give by far the best conditions, and local skippers find them on the large majority of outings. They are wild animals, though β sightings are very likely, never guaranteed, and you should be wary of anyone who promises otherwise.
What the day looks like
From Samui it's an early start: ferry across to Donsak, a short drive down the coast, then out on a local boat with skippers who have watched these animals for years. Engines drop to idle and you scan the water for the pale arc of a surfacing back β the wait is rarely long. Afterwards, Khanom keeps giving: a proper Thai seafood lunch, a swim off a beach you may have entirely to yourselves, and a coastline of green hills that feels a world away from the island buzz. You're back on Samui for the evening.
Watching them responsibly
- Distance is the deal. Good boats hold back and never chase β the dolphins choose how close to come, and they often choose very close.
- No swimming with them, no feeding. This population thrives because it's left to live normally. That's the whole point.
- Mornings, small groups. Calmer seas, softer light, less pressure on the animals β and better photos for you.
