Koh Samui itineraries, day by day

Five ready-made plans — 2, 3, 4, 5 days and a full week — built around the one thing most itineraries ignore: the boats do not sail every day.

Most Koh Samui itineraries are written by people who have never had to book one

Ang Thong sails Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Koh Tao sails Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The sunset trawler does not go out at the weekend, the Muay Thai stadium only opens three nights a week, and the Bophut Walking Street is a Friday. Put those five facts on a calendar and the good itinerary writes itself — ignore them and you will spend your holiday rearranging it.

Ordered around departuresEach plan names the day of the week it should start on, so nothing you want is closed when you get there.

How to use these pages

From this page to a booked week

1

Count your nights

Not your days. A flight landing at 6 pm is not a day on Samui, and a 9 am departure is not one either.

2

Find your start day

Each itinerary names the weekday it works best from. Shift the whole plan, do not shuffle the days.

3

Book the fixed points first

Ang Thong, Koh Tao and the Muay Thai nights are the ones that sell out and only run on certain days. Everything else bends around them.

4

Send us the rest

Transfers, a private boat, a driver for a day, a table somewhere good — one message on WhatsApp and it is handled.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I actually need on Koh Samui?
Four full days is the honest minimum to see the island and get out to one of the marine parks without rushing. Three works if you accept doing one big day at sea and one on land. Two is a stopover: pick one half day at sea and one island loop, and let the rest go. A week is when Samui stops being a checklist and starts being a holiday — you get both marine parks, the jungle, and enough empty afternoons to enjoy them.
Why does the day of the week matter so much?
Because the best day trips do not run daily. Ang Thong National Marine Park sails Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan sail Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday; the sunset trawler runs Monday to Friday only; the Phetch Buncha stadium fights on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Land on a Thursday with a three-day plan built for a Friday start and you will lose one of the two big days.
Is Ang Thong or Koh Tao better if I can only do one?
Ang Thong for the landscape — the 42 limestone islands, the Emerald Lagoon viewpoint and the kayaking are unlike anything else in the Gulf. Koh Tao for the water: it is clearer, the coral is in better shape and the snorkelling is genuinely good rather than just pleasant. Families and photographers tend to prefer Ang Thong; snorkellers pick Koh Tao. Note that Ang Thong closes from 1 November to 15 December every year.
Can I do these itineraries with a scooter instead of tours?
Partly. The land days — temples, waterfalls, viewpoints, markets — are entirely doable on a scooter and cheaper that way, and we say so on each page. The sea days are not: the marine parks are one to two hours offshore and need a licensed boat. Be honest with yourself about the ring road too: it is fast, busy, and Samui's scooter accident statistics are the worst in the country.
What if a tour is full on the day my itinerary needs it?
Every itinerary page has a swaps section for exactly that. In short: Ang Thong on a full Monday becomes the luxury catamaran version, which sails daily; Koh Tao becomes Koh Madsum, which runs every day, morning and afternoon; a Muay Thai night becomes a night market. Nothing in these plans is load-bearing except the marine park you have set your heart on — book that one first.
When is the best time of year to follow these plans?
February to August is the driest, calmest stretch, and the boats almost always sail. October to December is the wet season on this coast: crossings get cancelled more often, and Ang Thong closes entirely from 1 November to 15 December. If you are travelling then, build your plan around the land days and treat the sea days as bonuses — and keep a spare afternoon.
