Hin Lad is a chain of small falls and pools on the quiet side of the island, reached by a jungle path that starts behind the temple just inland from Nathon. It is the emptiest of Samui's four waterfalls, and the best walk of the lot.
The trail follows the stream for twenty to thirty minutes, crossing it several times, past pools you can stop and swim in before the main fall at the top. A meditation centre sits beside the temple at the trailhead, so the first stretch is quiet by design. Best from October to January, when the stream is full.
The best of the four in the rainy season, and the emptiest all year.
The rocks in the stream are slippery and the path is unmarked in places; go in daylight and not alone if you can help it.
