Our tours page is a grid. Grids are fine for browsing and useless for choosing, and the question we actually get in WhatsApp is never "what do you offer" — it is "we have three days, one of us gets seasick and we have a six-year-old, what should we do?" This article is the answer to that question, written down. No trip here is the best one; there is only the one that fits your week.
Start with two questions
Everything else follows from these.
How long can you sit on a boat?Time at sea, not tour length, is what decides. Ang Thong and Koh Tao mean two to three hours of open water. Koh Madsum means twenty minutes.
What do you want to come home with?Snorkelling, a landscape, a beach to yourself, a bit of culture, or adrenaline. Almost nobody wants all five, and trying to get them ruins a week.

Ang Thong — the one people fly here for
Forty-two islands of vertical limestone, the emerald lake in a collapsed crater, a viewpoint that costs you five hundred steps and pays for all of them. It is the most spectacular day available from Samui, and it is also two and a half hours of open water and a full day out. Take it if the landscape is what you came for; skip it if half your group would rather be at the pool by two. Koh Tao — for the water, not the day
The best visibility and the best reef within reach of Samui, plus Koh Nang Yuan, which is three islets joined by a sandbar and one of the genuinely famous views in Thailand. The price is the crossing: about three hours at sea across the day, and it is the one trip where a rough forecast is really felt. Worth it if snorkelling is the reason you booked a beach holiday. Koh Madsum — the one we recommend most often
Twenty minutes off the south coast, the calmest and clearest water anywhere near Samui, white sand, and the pigs that gave Pig Island its name. Half a day, back for lunch, almost never rough. If you have young children, if someone gets seasick, or if you only want one boat day and no risk attached to it, this is the answer.
Sunset cruise and traditional fishing — the short ones
Both are late-afternoon trips of three to four hours along the coast, which means no open crossing and no seasickness worth the name. The sunset cruise leaves Bophut at 4.30 pm and puts you back in time for dinner at Fisherman's Village. Traditional fishing at ฿1 300 is our cheapest trip and the most unexpected — you fish the way the island has always fished, and eat what you catch. Neither eats a whole day, which is exactly why they slot into a week that already has one big excursion in it.
Koh Phangan — a second island, not an excursion
A short crossing and then a full day by road on a much wilder island: waterfalls, the empty northern beaches, viewpoints. At ฿5 400 it is our most expensive day by some distance, because it is really two trips in one. It suits people staying a fortnight more than people staying a week. The land trips
Half of Samui is a mountain covered in jungle and almost nobody goes up it. These are also the trips that work when the sea does not — which, from October to December, matters.

The ATV is our most booked trip and the one people talk about afterwards; the island and temples day is the one that changes how you see the rest of your holiday. Both are described further in the guide to the interior and the temples of Koh Samui.
What the season changes
From January to April everything runs and you can book in any order. From May to August the sea is generally good with short showers. From October to December the Gulf gets rough, and sea trips are confirmed the evening before — Ang Thong and Koh Tao are the first to be cancelled, Koh Madsum and the coastal trips the last. If you are travelling in those months, plan the land trips first and treat a boat day as a bonus. The month-by-month detail is in the best time to visit.
How many, and in what order
Two or three in a week. We say this against our own interest and we mean it: a fourth boat day is a day you spend tired, and the sea stops registering. A pattern that works over seven days is one big sea day, one land day, and one short late-afternoon trip, with at least one clear day between each.
Order matters slightly. Put the big excursion early enough that a weather cancellation can be moved, and never on your last full day. If you are combining, our five-day itinerary lays out a version that works.
What we do not sell, and why
No elephant riding, no shows, no feeding, and no tiger anything. There is an honest version of seeing animals here and it is the one at Khanom, where the pink dolphins are wild, unfed and free to leave — which also means we cannot promise you will see them, and we say so before you book.
