2 days — the 48-hour stopover
One half day at sea, an elephant sanctuary, one loop of the island, two good dinners. The plan for a layover, a long weekend cut short, or a first taste before Koh Phangan.
See the itineraryThree days is the classic long weekend — and the length where starting on the right weekday changes everything.
Three days is where Koh Samui starts to work. You get one full day at sea — the one everybody comes for — plus an evening on the water and a full loop of the island, and you still sleep enough.
It is also the length where the weekday matters most. The sunset trawler runs Monday to Friday. Ang Thong sails Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The Phetch Buncha stadium fights Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Bophut's Walking Street is a Friday. There is exactly one start day that catches all four, and it is Friday.
Land Thursday evening, start Friday morning, fly out Monday, and this plan gives you the sunset cruise straight into the island's best market, the marine park on the Saturday, a fight night the same evening if you have the legs for it, and the temples on Sunday. Shift it and you will lose one of them — which is fine, but do it knowingly.
Friday is the only start day that catches all four fixed points: the trawler cruise (Mon–Fri), the Bophut Walking Street (Friday), Ang Thong (Mon/Wed/Sat) and the stadium (Mon/Wed/Sat).
If you cannot land on a Thursday, the next best start is Wednesday: cruise on the Wednesday afternoon, Ang Thong on Saturday does not fit any more, so swap in Koh Tao on the Thursday and take the temples on Friday, finishing at the Walking Street. Tell us your arrival day and we will do this arithmetic for you.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 (Fri) | Beach, and a slow start | Sunset cruise on a wooden trawler | Fisherman's Village Walking Street |
| Day 2 (Sat) | Ang Thong Marine Park | Kayaking and the Emerald Lagoon | Muay Thai at Phetch Buncha |
| Day 3 (Sun) | Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem | Na Muang waterfalls, west coast | Last dinner in Bophut |
Do not book a big day for your first morning. Sleep, swim, and let the island start at two in the afternoon.
💡 Tip : The cruise needs a minimum of eight guests and closes bookings four hours ahead. Book it before you fly, not on the day.
⚠️ Watch out : No alcohol on board and you cannot bring your own. Not suitable for children under four or for pregnant travellers.
A restored Thai trawler, beanbags on the roof, a swim stop in a quiet bay, then the sun going down over the water. Pick-up around 2 pm, back for dinner.

Forty-two limestone islands, a lagoon in a crater, kayaks under the cliffs. Long day, early start, worth every minute.
💡 Tip : Our departure is capped at 16 guests, which is the whole point of it — but it also means dates go early in high season. Book this one first and build the rest of the weekend around it.
⚠️ Watch out : The park closes completely from 1 November to 15 December. If your trip falls in that window, use the Koh Tao day instead.
The 42 islands of the national park on a boat capped at 16 guests: the Emerald Lagoon viewpoint, sea kayaking under the cliffs, snorkelling and a beach lunch.

Temples, a waterfall, the west coast — the day that turns a beach break into a trip to Koh Samui.
💡 Tip : If you fly out on day 3 rather than day 4, swap this for the Koh Madsum half day in the morning and go straight to the airport after.
The whole island in a day: Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, the Na Muang waterfalls, the Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks, local markets and a Thai lunch.

Three nights on the north coast is the right call for this plan: Bophut puts you inside the Friday market and on the sunset cruise's standard pick-up route, and Bangrak and Maenam are ten minutes either side of it. Chaweng works too and has more to do after midnight. Whatever you pick, stay put — moving hotels inside three nights costs you half a day.
Ang Thong full or closedTake the luxury catamaran version instead: it sails daily, including in the park's closed season on nearby waters, with breakfast and lunch cooked on board.
Prefer the snorkelling to the scenerySwap Ang Thong for Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan — clearer water, better coral — but it only sails Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, which moves your whole weekend.
Skip the guided island tourDay 3 works with a driver for the day (about ฿2,500 for the car) or a scooter (about ฿250). You lose the guiding and the lunch, you gain your own timing.
Trade the fight night for a boatTraditional sunset fishing runs daily from 4 pm: squid under the lamps, your catch grilled on board. Gentler than a stadium at midnight.
Half a day with elephantsThe Elephant Kingdom sanctuary is three hours, runs every day and needs no weather. No riding, no shows — our honest read, reservations included, is on the tour page.
Learn to make it, not just eat itA Thai cooking class fills the free morning of day 1 without touching the cruise: market run, four dishes, and you eat what you cook.
