The tour in a nutshell
Every sunset photograph of Samui was taken on the west coast, and almost nobody staying on the east coast ever goes there. Chaweng and Lamai face east: the sun rises out of the sea in front of them and sets behind the hills at their backs.
This afternoon crosses the island for the other side. It starts in Nathon — the administrative town, the ferry port, and the only place on Samui with a real streetscape: three parallel streets of wooden Chinese shophouses, a morning market, and the Hai Lam shrine built by the Hainanese families who settled here for the coconut trade.
Then south along the coast, past a temple with its own mummified monk that nobody visits, to Taling Ngam or Lipa Noi for the last hour of light over the Five Islands. Dinner, if you want it, is at Bang Por, in one of the open-sided restaurants built out over the water.

💡 Good to know
🕐 Timing moves: the pick-up time follows the sunset through the year, so it shifts by an hour or so between seasons. We confirm the exact time the day before.
🦟 Dusk on this coast: the west side has mosquitoes when the light goes. Repellent belongs in your bag, not in the car.
🍽️ About dinner: the Bang Por restaurants are simple, over the water, and cash only. If you would rather eat at your hotel we drop you back instead — say so when you book.
🌧️ In the rains: sunsets here are hit and miss from late October to December. We will tell you honestly what the sky is doing before you commit to the day.
🏘️ Nathon closes early: most of the town shuts in the late afternoon, which is why we walk it first and drive south after.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the sunset cruise?
No. The sunset cruise is a boat, and it leaves from the north coast. This is a road afternoon on the west coast — the old town, two temples, and the sunset from the sand rather than from a deck. They suit different evenings, and plenty of people do both.
Where exactly do we watch the sunset?
Taling Ngam or Lipa Noi, depending on the tide and where the light is that week. Both face west over open water with the Five Islands offshore; Lipa Noi has the flatter, shallower water and Taling Ngam the wider view.
Can we skip Nathon and just do the sunset?
You can, and it becomes a shorter afternoon. But Nathon is the part people did not expect to like — it is the only place on the island where the buildings tell you what Samui was before the beaches.
Is the seafood dinner included?
No, and it is optional. The stilt restaurants at Bang Por are simple, cash only, and among the best value on the island. Tell us when you book and we will build the timing around it.
What if it is cloudy?
We will say so. From late October to December the west coast sky is unreliable, and we would rather move you to another day than sell you a grey horizon.
