Five days is the length most people should book and almost nobody does. It fits everything the four-day plan fits, and then adds the thing that actually makes a holiday: a day where the only decision is which end of the beach to walk to.
It also fixes the one flaw in shorter plans. With three or four days you are always trading — the marine park against the jungle, the temples against a lie-in. With five, the trades disappear. You get Koh Tao and Ang Thong, the temple loop, the mountain, a sunset on the water, and a night at the stadium, without doing two big sea days in a row.
The order below starts on a Saturday, because that is the day that makes the calendar work: stadium Saturday, Koh Tao Sunday, land Monday, mountain and sea Tuesday, Ang Thong Wednesday. Land Friday night, fly out Thursday, and you never once wait for something to open.

Saturday is the start day that lines everything up: the stadium fights on Saturday, Koh Tao sails on Sunday, the trawler cruise runs on Tuesday, and Ang Thong sails on Wednesday. Nothing needs to be moved and nothing is closed.
A Sunday start works almost as well — Koh Tao on Sunday, temples Monday, mountain and cruise Tuesday, Ang Thong Wednesday, stadium that same Wednesday night. The one to avoid is a Thursday start: it puts both marine parks back to back or drops one of them.

Day by day
Day 1 — Arrive, and let the island introduce itself
No alarm, no boat, no minivan. One swim, one dinner, and eight rounds of very loud Thailand.
- MorningTransfer from the airport, ten to thirty minutes depending on your coast. Cash from an ATM, a local SIM, and a bottle of the reef-safe sunscreen you forgot to pack.
- AfternoonThe beach nearest your hotel, and nothing else. Resist the urge to book something for the evening of your arrival day — you will be more tired than you think.
- 19:00Dinner before the stadium; the food inside is not the point.
- 21:00Phetch Buncha stadium on the Chaweng road: eight scheduled bouts, the Wai Khru Ram Muay ceremony before each, until roughly 23:50. Ringside if you want to feel the impact, stadium seats if you want to see the whole thing.
💡 Tip : Fights run Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. If your day 1 is not one of those, move this to whichever evening is — nothing else in the plan depends on it.
⚠️ Watch out : It is a ticket, not a tour: no hotel transfer. Agree a return taxi fare before you go in.

Day 2 — Koh Tao — the clearest water in the Gulf
The long crossing north, the good coral, the sandbar. The day snorkellers book the trip for.
- 07:00Pick-up. The boat takes 16 guests and needs 8 to sail, so this is a book-ahead day.
- 08:30An hour and a half across to Koh Tao. Sit low and aft if the swell is up.
- 10:30Guided snorkelling over the coral. This is the difference between snorkelling and just swimming with a mask on.
- 12:30Thai buffet lunch on the island, facing the water.
- 14:00Koh Nang Yuan: the sandbar between three islets, a second snorkel stop, and the short brutal climb to the viewpoint.
- 17:30Back at the hotel.
- 19:30Lamai night market — fewer souvenirs, more actual food, and better value than anywhere in Chaweng. Our pick for a cheap dinner that is genuinely good.
💡 Tip : A long-sleeved rash vest beats another coat of sunscreen, and it is the difference between enjoying day 3 and hiding from the sun.
⚠️ Watch out : Departures Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday only. Not open to pregnant travellers or guests with reduced mobility.

Day 3 — The island itself: temples, waterfalls, the quiet coast
A land day on purpose, the day after a long one at sea. Gold, water, and the half of Samui the ring road hides.
- 09:00Pick-up for the island and temples tour. Big Buddha first, before the coaches — twelve metres of gold on a causeway island at Bang Rak.
- 10:00Wat Plai Laem: the eighteen-armed Guanyin standing over a lake full of fish. Quieter than the Big Buddha and, for our money, the better temple.
- 11:30Inland to the Na Muang waterfalls, then the mountain road.
- 13:00Thai lunch, included, in a village rather than on a beach road.
- 14:30Hin Ta & Hin Yai at Lamai, then west to Nathon and the villages the ring road forgot.
- 17:30Back for a swim. Dinner in Bophut, on the water.
💡 Tip : Cover shoulders and knees for both temples. The loaner sarongs work but nobody has ever liked a photograph of themselves in one.

Day 4 — The mountain in the morning, the sea at sunset
The best day of the five, and the one people write home about. Jungle tracks and a waterfall, then a slow wooden boat into the light.
- 09:00Pick-up for the ATV and buggy tour above Maenam. Automatic machines, briefing and a practice loop first; no licence needed and beginners are the norm.
- 09:45Wide dirt tracks up through the mountain jungle to the island's highest viewpoints — the Big Buddha is visible from up there on a clear morning — then down to a hidden waterfall to swim.
- 11:45Back down and showered. Take the two-hour ride today so that you are not rushing the afternoon.
- 14:00Pick-up for the sunset cruise on a restored wooden trawler: beanbags on the roof, a swim stop at anchor in a calm bay, snacks and soft drinks on deck.
- 18:15The sun going down from the water, which is a different thing entirely from watching it from a beach bar.
- 19:30Back on land, late dinner on the north coast.
💡 Tip : Sharing a quad is ฿8,600 for two (pilot and passenger); a two-seat buggy is ฿9,800; a solo quad is ฿5,400. Children under 10 ride as passengers for ฿330.
⚠️ Watch out : The trawler sails Monday to Friday only, needs a minimum of eight guests and closes bookings four hours ahead.

Day 5 — Ang Thong — the last day, and the biggest one
Forty-two limestone islands, a lagoon inside a collapsed crater, kayaks under the cliffs, and lunch on a beach with a national park behind it.
- 06:30Pick-up. The exact time comes through the night before.
- 08:30Speedboat out to Mu Ko Ang Thong, about an hour across.
- 10:00Koh Mae Ko: the climb to the viewpoint over the Hidden Emerald Lagoon. Short, steep, rocky, optional — and the reason this park is famous.
- 11:30Sea kayaking beneath the cliffs, then snorkelling. Park fee payable on the day in cash: ฿300 adult, ฿150 child under 130 cm.
- 12:30Buffet lunch on the beach at Koh Wua Ta Lap, then the viewpoint over all 42 islands.
- 17:30Back at the hotel. Last dinner in Fisherman's Village — quiet and good on any evening that is not a Friday.
💡 Tip : Book this one first, before the flights are even confirmed if you can. Sixteen seats, three departures a week, and it is the day everyone remembers.
⚠️ Watch out : Closed 1 November to 15 December. In that window, swap in the Koh Phangan day trip or the luxury catamaran, which sails year-round.

Where to sleep for this itinerary
Five nights justifies picking your coast properly. Bophut and Bangrak are the best all-rounders for this itinerary — closest to the pick-up routes, walkable to dinner, ten minutes from the airport. Choose Chaweng if you want the beach and the nightlife on your doorstep, Maenam or Lamai if you want the same island for a third of the price, and Choeng Mon or Taling Ngam if this is a honeymoon. Stay in one place: two hotels in five nights costs you a day.

Is 5 days enough for Koh Samui?
More than enough for the island itself, and the right length if you also want to sit still occasionally. Five days fits both marine park day trips, the temple and waterfall loop, a mountain morning, an evening on the water and a night at the stadium — with a slow afternoon between the big days rather than three of them stacked together.
What is the best 5-day Koh Samui itinerary?
Start on a Saturday: fight night on arrival day, Koh Tao on Sunday, the island and temples loop on Monday, quad biking and a sunset cruise on Tuesday, and Ang Thong Marine Park on Wednesday. That order matches the real departure days of every boat involved, and never puts two long sea days back to back.
How much does 5 days in Koh Samui cost?
Roughly ฿22,300 per person keeping it lean and ฿39,800 done comfortably, excluding flights — about €580 to €1,040 at current rates. Activities account for ฿14,785 to ฿19,085 of that. The cheapest meaningful saving is doing day 3 yourself by scooter and skipping the quad tour, which takes about ฿6,000 per person off the total.
Should I split my five days between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan?
Only if the Full Moon Party is the reason you came. Otherwise no: a hotel change costs you the better part of a day at each end, and everything worth seeing on Koh Phangan fits into one day trip from Samui — waterfalls, viewpoints, the Chinese temple and the quiet beaches, with the ferry included. Keep the same room for five nights and let the boats do the travelling.
What if it rains?
Rain alone does not cancel a boat — unsafe seas do, and the crews are conservative about it. Between October and December, book the two sea days early in your five so you have somewhere to move them to, and use the land days as your wet-weather plan: the waterfalls are better after rain, and the temples do not care. Ang Thong is closed entirely from 1 November to 15 December.
