Discovery Dive — Koh Tao or Sail Rock

Your first breath underwater, in the clearest water in the Gulf. No licence, no experience, no course to sit — just an instructor, twelve metres and a reef.

The tour in a nutshell

Snorkelling shows you the top three metres of a reef. This is the day you go under it.

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving programme is designed for people who have never breathed underwater and are not signing up for a course. There is a briefing on land, a short shallow-water session to get used to the equipment and to clearing a mask, then guided dives with an instructor beside you the whole time, to a maximum of twelve metres. You are not certified at the end of it and that is fine — you have dived.

The boat runs from Samui either to Koh Tao, which has the healthiest coral and the best visibility in the Gulf, or to Sail Rock — Hin Bai — the pinnacle rising out of open water between Samui and Tao, and the most famous dive site in this part of Thailand. Which one you get depends on conditions and the day's plan, and both are a considerable step up from anything you can reach off Samui itself.

One detail that matters for our French readers: this operator runs instruction in French as well as English, German, Dutch, Spanish and Russian. Being told how to equalise your ears in your own language, the first time, is worth more than it sounds.

Koh Tao or Sail RockSail Rock is the Gulf's signature dive — a pinnacle in open water with a vertical chimney through it. Koh Tao has the clearest water and the healthiest hard coral.

💡 Good to know

✈️ Do not fly within 24 hours of diving: this is the standard safety rule and it is not negotiable. If your flight home is tomorrow, dive another day — this is the single most common planning mistake we see.

🩺 Medical questionnaire: you complete a standard health declaration before diving. Asthma, heart conditions, recent surgery, pregnancy and some medications require a doctor's clearance — sort it before you travel, not at the dive shop.

👂 Equalising: if you have a cold or blocked sinuses on the day, say so. Descending with blocked ears is painful and pointless, and the crew will happily reschedule you.

🌊 Maximum depth 12 m: that is the limit of the Discover Scuba programme, and it is plenty — the light and most of the life are above that anyway.

Booking cut-off: reservations close 10 hours before departure. Free cancellation up to 24 h before.

🏊 Swimming: you do not need to be a strong swimmer, but you do need to be comfortable in water with your face in it. Tell the instructor honestly how you feel about that.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a diving licence or any experience?
No. This is the PADI Discover Scuba Diving programme, designed precisely for people who have never dived. There is nothing to study and no exam. You get a land briefing, a shallow-water session to get used to breathing through a regulator and clearing your mask, then guided dives with an instructor alongside you to a maximum of twelve metres. You do not come away certified — for that you would do the Open Water course, which takes three to four days.
Koh Tao or Sail Rock — which will I dive?
It depends on the day: conditions and the dive plan decide. Sail Rock, or Hin Bai, is a pinnacle in open water between Samui and Koh Tao and the most famous dive site in the Gulf, with a vertical chimney running through it and, in season, whale sharks passing. Koh Tao has the clearest water and the healthiest hard coral. On a first dive, both are far better than anything within reach of Samui itself.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
฿7,650 per person for a day of around seven hours, running every day of the year. That covers all equipment, the instructor, the guided dives, lunch and drinking water on board, and the boat from Koh Samui. Hotel pick-up is available — give your hotel name when you book.
Can I dive and then fly home?
Not within 24 hours. This is the standard safety rule after diving and the crew will not bend it, so plan the dive for early in your trip rather than the day before your flight. It is the most common mistake we see people make with a diving day, and it is the one that cannot be fixed on the morning.
Is there an age limit, or a health condition that would stop me?
You complete a standard medical questionnaire before diving. Asthma, heart conditions, recent surgery, pregnancy and certain medications require written clearance from a doctor — get that sorted before you leave home, because a dive shop cannot issue it. If you have a cold or blocked sinuses on the day, tell the crew: descending with blocked ears is painful and they will reschedule you rather than push on.
What if I panic underwater?
You surface, and nobody minds. The instructor is beside you throughout and the whole first section happens in shallow water precisely so you can find that out before going any deeper. A fair number of people try the shallow session, decide it is not for them, and spend the day snorkelling from the boat instead — which is a perfectly good day out. If you would rather start there, our Koh Tao snorkelling day visits the same water without the tanks.
