Roughly thirty thousand people a month cross to a beach on Koh Phangan called Haad Rin, and a good share of them start the evening on Koh Samui. We do not sell tickets to the Full Moon Party and we have no stake in whether you go. What we do get, most months, are messages from people stranded at a pier at 2 am because nobody told them how the return works. So here is the logistics article: how the dates are set, which boat from which pier, what it costs, how you get home, and what actually goes wrong.
What it actually is
A beach party that started in the eighties with a few dozen people and now fills a kilometre of sand once a month: sound systems every fifty metres, buckets of spirits sold from carts, fire ropes, body paint, and sunrise. It is not a festival with a line-up or a ticket — it is an open beach with a small entrance fee, and the atmosphere ranges from genuinely good fun to a very crowded night out, depending on the month and your tolerance for other people.
It is also entirely unlike the rest of Koh Phangan, which is one of the quietest islands in the Gulf for twenty-nine days out of thirty. If the beach party is not the appeal, the island itself is worth a day of your trip and looks nothing like this.
When it happens — how the dates work
The party runs on the night of, or the night before, each full moon — so roughly once a month, twelve or thirteen times a year. The dates are not simply the astronomical full moon: they shift when the full moon lands on a major Buddhist holiday such as Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha or Asahna Bucha, when alcohol sales are suspended nationwide, and occasionally for national days of mourning or royal occasions. Half Moon and Black Moon parties fill the gaps in between, elsewhere on the island.
💡 Check the date, do not calculate it
Any article that prints a year of dates will be wrong for at least one of them. Look up the current schedule on the Koh Phangan party listings a few weeks before you travel, and again the week you arrive — the shifted dates are usually announced late. If your trip is built around the party, book your Samui accommodation only once you have confirmed the night.
Getting there from Koh Samui
Two piers on Samui matter, both on the north coast, and both a short transfer from Chaweng, Bophut or Maenam.

Landing at Haad Rin is the simplest thing you can do: you step off the boat onto the beach and the party is right there. Landing at Thong Sala means a shared taxi over the hill, which is fine going out and a scrum coming back. The part people get wrong: getting back
On party nights, extra boats run through the night from Haad Rin back to Samui. In practice the first tends to leave in the small hours and they continue at intervals until after sunrise, but the schedule is set close to the date and changes month to month. Three rules make the difference between a good night and a miserable dawn:
Buy the return before you crossNot at 3 am, in a queue, with a phone at 4 %. Buy both legs at the pier on the Samui side, in daylight, and photograph the ticket.
Know your boat's time before you start drinkingWrite it on your hand if you have to. "There'll be another one" is true and can mean three hours on a pier.
Agree a meeting point with your groupPhone signal on that beach at midnight is unusable. Pick a landmark at one end of the sand and a time, and stick to it.
The honest alternative: sleep on Koh Phangan. Rooms near Haad Rin sell out weeks ahead for party nights and impose minimum stays of three to five nights, but a room anywhere on the island beats a 4 am crossing. If you cannot get one, a full-day trip the following day rather than a night crossing is the version we would choose.

The risks, stated plainly
We would rather be the boring ones about this than have you find out. None of it is exotic; all of it happens every month.
The bucketsA bucket is a full bottle's worth of spirits, often unbranded, mixed with an energy drink. People misjudge them because they taste of nothing. Watch it being poured, and never leave a drink.
The fire ropeThe flaming skipping rope injures people every single party. There is no clever technique. Standing near it while drunk is how most of the burns happen.
SwimmingDo not. Every year the sea takes someone at Haad Rin who went in at 4 am after a bucket, in the dark, with no lifeguard anywhere.
The sandBroken glass everywhere by midnight. Closed shoes, not flip-flops, and definitely not bare feet.
Your thingsTake the minimum: cash, a photo of your passport, your boat ticket, a charged phone. Phones and bags disappear from the sand all night.
DrugsPenalties in Thailand are severe, plain-clothes police work these beaches, and cannabis has been prescription-only since June 2025 — the brief legal window is closed.

If it turns out not to be for you
Plenty of people go once, enjoy it, and would not go twice — and plenty decide from the description that it sounds like a crowded beach with sticky feet, which it also is. Koh Phangan is genuinely worth crossing for on any other day: waterfalls in the interior, the empty beaches of the north coast, a coastline that has almost nothing built on it.
