Why go

Thirty minutes north of Samui by boat, Koh Phangan is two islands in one: Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party at the southern tip, and a wild, barely built east coast reachable only by boat or a very rough track.

What you will find

As a day trip it works best as the second island: Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach in the north-east, the waterfalls inland, or the beaches around Chaloklum. Boats leave from Bang Rak, Maenam and Nathon depending on the destination.

Good to know

Full Moon nights fill every boat, book the return in advance.

Worth knowing before you go

On Full Moon nights every boat fills and the return crossings are packed - book both directions in advance, and do not count on a late boat back.
