Why go

Thirty minutes north of Samui by boat, Koh Phangan is two islands in one: Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party at the southern tip, and a wild, barely built east coast reachable only by boat or a very rough track.

What you will find

As a day trip it works best as the second island: Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach in the north-east, the waterfalls inland, or the beaches around Chaloklum. Boats leave from Bang Rak, Maenam and Nathon depending on the destination.

Good to know

Full Moon nights fill every boat — book the return in advance.

Worth knowing before you go

On Full Moon nights every boat fills and the return crossings are packed — book both directions in advance, and do not count on a late boat back.

Big Buddha — Wat Phra Yai

A twelve-metre golden Buddha seated on the islet of Ko Fan, joined to Samui by a causeway. Steps, bells, a market underneath, and the north coast laid out behind it.
