4 days in Koh Samui

Four days is the honest minimum for Koh Samui — and the first length where you can have both marine parks without living on a boat.

🗓️ 4 days · 4 nights🌊 2 full days at sea💸 From ฿19,000 / person⚓ Best from a Wednesday

Why this order

If someone asks us how long to spend on Koh Samui and will only accept one number, we say four days. It is the first length that fits both marine park day trips, because you can put a land day between them — and after seven hours on a speedboat, a land day is not a luxury, it is maintenance.

It is also the length where the departure calendar starts to bite. Koh Tao sails Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Ang Thong sails Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. There is no run of four consecutive days that gives you both with a rest day between them and still catches the Friday market — except one, and it starts on a Wednesday.

Land Tuesday evening, start Wednesday, fly out Sunday morning. Wednesday is a fight night. Thursday is Koh Tao. Friday is quad bikes in the morning, the sunset trawler in the afternoon and the Walking Street at night. Saturday is Ang Thong. That is the week, and it is very hard to improve on.

The best day to start : Wednesday

⚓ Wednesday

Wednesday is the start day that makes all four days land correctly: the stadium fights on Wednesday, Koh Tao sails on Thursday, the trawler and the Bophut market are both Friday, and Ang Thong sails on Saturday.

A Saturday start also works, in reverse: Ang Thong Saturday, Koh Tao Sunday, land day Monday, and the stadium on Monday night. You lose the Friday market and the sunset cruise falls on a weekday of your choosing. If your flights fix a different day, send them to us and we will re-cut the order.

Day by day

Day 1 — Land, swim, and go and watch eight fights

Nothing that needs an alarm. One long swim, one good dinner, and an evening that tells you exactly which country you are in.

  • MorningAirport to hotel — Samui's airport is a garden with a runway attached and the transfer is ten to thirty minutes depending on your coast. Cash, SIM, sunscreen.
  • AfternoonChaweng for the long sand and the shops, Choeng Mon for the quiet cove, Bophut if you want to walk to dinner. Do not plan anything else.
  • 19:00Early dinner. The stadium does not serve food worth eating.
  • 21:00Phetch Buncha stadium, on the main Chaweng road: eight scheduled bouts and the Wai Khru Ram Muay ceremony, until about 23:50. Ringside or stadium seating; the benches are wooden, so take something to sit on.

💡 Tip : The ticket does not include transfers. A taxi from Chaweng is short; from Maenam or Lamai, agree the return fare before you go in.

⚠️ Watch out : Fights are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday only, and the ticket is valid for the date you choose and no other.

🎟️ Book this day — Muay Thai at Phetch Buncha Stadium

Eight real bouts and the Wai Khru Ram Muay ceremony, on the main road in Chaweng. It is a ticket, not a tour: transfers are not included.

Day 2 — Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan — the clear water day

Ninety minutes north to the best snorkelling in the Gulf, and the sandbar that joins three islands together.

  • 07:00Pick-up. The boat is capped at 16 guests and needs a minimum of 8 to sail, so this one is booked, not decided on the morning.
  • 08:30Crossing to Koh Tao, about an hour and a half. Sit at the back if you are prone to seasickness.
  • 10:30Guided snorkelling over Koh Tao's coral. This is the reason to come: the water here is genuinely clearer than anywhere off Samui, and the reef is in better condition.
  • 12:30Thai buffet lunch on Koh Tao, facing the sea.
  • 14:00Koh Nang Yuan: three islets joined by a sandbar, a second snorkel stop, and a short steep climb to the viewpoint that is on every postcard of the Gulf.
  • 16:30Back at your hotel around 17:30.
  • 19:00Maenam walking street, if it is running — a small, village-scale market, easy with kids and easy to park at. Generally Thursday, but confirm locally.

💡 Tip : Bring a rash vest rather than more sunscreen. Six hours of reflected sun on your back is what ruins day 3.

⚠️ Watch out : Departures are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Pregnant travellers and guests with reduced mobility are not admitted, and children over 120 cm pay the adult fare.

Day 3 — Mountain in the morning, sea in the evening, market at night

The biggest day of the four and the best one. Jungle tracks, a hidden waterfall, then a slow boat into the sunset and straight into the Friday market.

  • 09:00Pick-up for the ATV and buggy tour above Maenam. Automatic machines, no licence needed, a briefing and a practice loop before the tracks.
  • 09:45Wide dirt tracks up through the mountain jungle to the highest viewpoints on the island — on a clear morning you can see the Big Buddha from up there — then down to a hidden waterfall for a swim.
  • 11:45Back down. Take the two-hour ride today, not the four-hour one: you need to be showered and ready by two.
  • 14:00Pick-up for the sunset cruise. Beanbags, a swim stop at anchor, snacks on deck as the light goes.
  • 19:00Off the boat and into Fisherman's Village, five minutes away, where the Friday Walking Street runs until 23:00. This is the best evening on Koh Samui and we will argue with anyone about it.

💡 Tip : Two people can share one quad (pilot and passenger, ฿8,600) or take a two-seat buggy (฿9,800). Solo riders pay ฿5,400 for the machine.

⚠️ Watch out : This day only works Monday to Friday, because the trawler does not sail at weekends. If your day 3 is a Saturday, move the cruise to day 1.

Day 4 — Ang Thong — the one that ends up framed

Forty-two limestone islands, a lagoon inside a collapsed crater, kayaks under the cliffs, lunch on a beach with nothing behind it.

  • 06:30Pick-up. Early, and worth it — the park is calmest before ten.
  • 08:30Speedboat out to Mu Ko Ang Thong, about an hour.
  • 10:00Koh Mae Ko and the climb to the Hidden Emerald Lagoon viewpoint. Steep, short, optional, unforgettable.
  • 11:30Sea kayaking under the cliffs, then snorkelling. Park fee on the day: ฿300 adult, ฿150 child under 130 cm, cash.
  • 12:30Buffet lunch on the beach at Koh Wua Ta Lap, then the 42-island viewpoint.
  • 17:30Back at the hotel. Last dinner in Bophut, with the lights of Koh Phangan across the water.

💡 Tip : Two big sea days in four is plenty. If anyone in the group is finding the boats hard, swap this for the catamaran version — same park, twice the deck space, half the bounce.

⚠️ Watch out : Ang Thong closes from 1 November to 15 December every year. In that window this day becomes the Koh Phangan day trip instead.

🎟️ Book this day — Ang Thong Marine Park — VIP small group

The 42 islands of the national park on a boat capped at 16 guests: the Emerald Lagoon viewpoint, sea kayaking under the cliffs, snorkelling and a beach lunch.

Where to sleep for this itinerary

Four nights is long enough to justify a good room and short enough that moving hotels is a waste of half a day. The north coast — Bophut, Bangrak, Maenam — sits closest to this plan's pick-ups and puts you inside the Friday market. Chaweng is the pick if you want the beach on your doorstep and somewhere open after midnight. Choeng Mon is the quiet compromise between the two.

Swaps and upgrades

🏍️

Not a quad personSwap the day 3 morning for the 4x4 jungle safari — same waterfalls and viewpoints, someone else drives, and it works for grandparents and toddlers alike.

🐬

Trade a marine park for something rarerThe pink dolphins of Khanom leave at dawn and are back by lunch. Fewer people see them in a year than do Ang Thong in a week.

🛥️

Make day 4 a private oneThe same coastline on your own boat, with your own timings: see our yacht and speedboat charters.

🌧️

Rainy season insuranceFrom October to December, book the two sea days on day 2 and day 3 and keep day 4 free. If a crossing is cancelled you still have a slot to move it into — and a cooking class is the covered four hours to move it to.

🐘

Trade the quad for elephantsThe Elephant Kingdom sanctuary is three hours, wheelchair accessible and works from age four — a gentler day 3 morning than a mountain track.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 days enough for Koh Samui?
Yes — it is the length we recommend when someone wants one number. Four days fits both marine park day trips with a land day between them, one evening on the water and one night out, without any day feeling like a transfer. Fewer than four and you are choosing between Ang Thong and Koh Tao; more than four and you start adding rest rather than sights.
Can I do both Ang Thong and Koh Tao in four days?
Yes, and this itinerary does exactly that — but only because it starts on a Wednesday. Koh Tao sails Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday; Ang Thong sails Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. A Wednesday start puts Koh Tao on Thursday and Ang Thong on Saturday, with a land day in between. Almost any other start day forces them back to back, which is a lot of speedboat for one week.
What is the best 4-day Koh Samui itinerary?
The one on this page: a fight night on arrival day, Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan on day 2, quad bikes and a sunset cruise on day 3, and Ang Thong Marine Park on day 4. It alternates sea and land, never asks you to be up at dawn two days running, and finishes on the island's most photographed day out.
How much does 4 days in Koh Samui cost?
About ฿19,000 per person keeping it tight, and ฿33,900 done comfortably, excluding flights. Activities are the dominant line: the two marine park days alone are ฿8,385 per person. Skipping the quad tour saves ฿4,300 per person and is the easiest cut if the budget is fixed.
Do I need a scooter or a car for this itinerary?
No. Every day on this plan includes hotel pick-up except the Muay Thai night, which is a ticket rather than a tour and needs a taxi. If you want to explore between the fixed points, rent a scooter for one day rather than four — and only if you have ridden before.
