Why go

Koh Madsum's larger neighbour, ringed by the healthiest reef within reach of Samui and home to a handful of families. If you want coral without the five-hour round trip to Koh Tao, this is the answer.

What you will find

The north side has the best snorkelling, in the morning, before the wind. There is nothing on the island but a few houses, a couple of simple restaurants and the coral — no shops, no hotels to speak of, no jet skis.

Good to know

Snorkelling is best on the north side, in the morning.

Worth knowing before you go

Bring water and reef-safe sunscreen; there is no reliable place to buy either once you land.

Koh Madsum (Pig Island)

Twenty minutes off the south coast: a white sandbar, clear shallow water and a small herd of pigs that come down to the beach.

Wat Laem Sor & its golden chedi

The far south coast, and the least visited good temple on Samui: a chedi covered in golden-yellow tiles standing on the sand, with the sea behind it.

Bang Kao & Thong Krut

The south coast, where the sea turns into a sand flat at low tide and the longtail boats to Koh Tan and Pig Island are moored.
