Koh Samui for couples

Which coast, which month, and what to do with the six days between arriving and leaving.

Koh Samui does honeymoons well, and it does them badly, and the difference is almost entirely decided before you land — by which side of the island you booked and which month you picked. We plan a lot of these days, from a private sunset boat to the occasional ring in a pocket, and the couples who come back delighted have usually made the same three or four choices. Here they are.

Which coast — the decision that matters most

Samui is a ring road around a mountain, and its four coasts offer four completely different versions of a romantic week. Getting this wrong is the single most common way a honeymoon here disappoints: a beautiful resort on the wrong beach still has the wrong beach outside it.

🌅

South-west: Taling Ngam, Lipa NoiThe honeymoon coast. Hillside resorts over the Five Islands, sunset straight ahead, almost nobody on the sand. You will need a car or taxis to leave.

🌴

North: Choeng Mon, BophutThe best compromise. Calm shallow water, real restaurants within walking distance, and Fisherman's Village for dinner. Our usual recommendation.

🏖️

East: Chaweng Noi, LamaiFine sand and easy logistics, but the noise of Chaweng is close. Chaweng Noi works; central Chaweng does not.

🚫

Central ChawengThe one to avoid outright. Loud, built up and busy until three in the morning. Excellent for a group of friends, wrong for a honeymoon.

Our full profile of every beach, with the honest downsides, is in choosing your beach on Koh Samui, and the accommodation side is in where to stay. If you are torn between hillside remoteness and being able to walk to dinner: the north coast is the safer bet for a first trip, the south-west for a second.

When to come

January to April is the postcard version — dry, calm sea, every boat sailing, and the highest prices of the year. May to August is our quiet recommendation for couples: warm, much cheaper, far less busy, with short heavy showers rather than washed-out days.

What we would avoid for a honeymoon is late October through December. November is genuinely wet on this coast and the sea gets rough enough that boat days get cancelled — which matters more than usual when half the point of the week is a private boat. If your dates are fixed in that window, read the Samui, Phuket and Krabi comparison: the Andaman coast is in its dry season exactly then, and we would rather send you there than sell you a wet week.

The one thing every couple tells us they would do again: an evening on the water, alone.

What to actually do

A honeymoon that is only a resort pool is a lovely three days and a long four more. Samui is small enough that you can do something real in a morning and be back for lunch, which is the right rhythm for this kind of trip.

A boat, on your own

This is the one thing worth spending on. A shared day trip is good value and full of other people's holidays; a private boat costs more and changes the day entirely — you choose the beaches, you stop when you want, and there is nobody within a hundred metres. Our honeymoon and romantic cruise is built around exactly that, and for a bigger occasion the yacht charters go further.

If you would rather not privatise a whole boat, the sunset cruise at ฿1 650 is three hours from Bophut, and the Koh Madsum half-day has the calmest, clearest water within reach of Samui.

A day that is not on the water

Alternate. Two sea days in a row is one sea day too many for most people. The interior is fifteen minutes from any beach and nobody goes there: the waterfalls and viewpoints, the Secret Buddha Garden, the ridge roads with the whole island underneath. The 4×4 jungle safari does that in a morning without either of you having to drive a scooter on a wet mountain road.

Dinner, done right

Fisherman's Village in Bophut is the best evening on the island for a couple — a single wooden street on the water, restaurants with their tables in the sand, and a walking street on Friday nights. Then there is the version with a view, from the ridge above Chaweng. Both, plus the night-market calendar, are in where to eat on Koh Samui.

If you are proposing

We plan a handful of these a month, so a few things we have learned. The logistics are easy; the secrecy is the work. Keep everything on one message thread with one person, never a shared email address. Allow the set-up to happen while you are still at sea, so the beach reads as empty from the water and everything is simply there when you land. And build in a spare day — weather here is local and brief, and a proposal that has to happen on a particular afternoon is a proposal at the mercy of one cloud.

The mechanics, timings and what a set-up includes are on our proposals and celebrations page. Say yes to the photographer: it is the only part of the day nobody remembers clearly afterwards.

What a romantic week costs

Two people, seven nights, excluding flights.

Room, 7 nights฿18 000–30 000฿45 000–90 000
Transfers, both ways฿1 100–1 700฿1 700

A shared day trip, two people฿4 000–4 700

Roughly฿40 000–53 000฿85 000+

The full price list, line by line, is in what Koh Samui really costs. One structural note: private boats and transfers are priced per boat and per vehicle, not per person — which is the one place where being two rather than eight works against you, and the one place worth asking us for options rather than assuming.

Four mistakes we see

📍

Booking the resort before the coastA five-star on the wrong beach is still on the wrong beach. Pick the coast first, then the hotel.

🗓️

Filling every dayThree excursions in seven days is plenty. The good memories here are usually the unplanned mornings.

🛵

The scooter photoIt is the island's main cause of injury, and insurance will not pay without the right licence. Not the week to find out.

🏝️

Island-hopping the whole archipelagoTwo islands in ten days beats four. Boats are slow, and check-out mornings are lost mornings.

A week that works

DayPlan
1Land, transfer, nothing else. Dinner where you can walk to it.
2The beach and the pool. Massage in the afternoon.
3A boat day — Koh Madsum, or private if you are going to do it once.
4Inland: waterfalls, viewpoints, the Secret Buddha Garden.
5Nothing at all. This is the day people remember.
6Sunset cruise from Bophut, then Fisherman's Village for dinner.
7Morning swim, late check-out, transfer.

If you have ten days rather than seven, add the quiet north of Koh Phangan rather than a third island.

Honeymoon & romantic cruise

Frequently asked questions

Is Koh Samui good for a honeymoon?
Yes, provided you pick the right coast. The south-west and the north are made for it; central Chaweng is not. The island is also small enough that you can do something real in a morning and be back at the pool by lunch, which suits this kind of trip.
Which is the most romantic part of Koh Samui?
Taling Ngam and the south-west coast: hillside resorts looking over the Five Islands, the sunset in front of you, and almost empty beaches. The trade-off is 45 to 55 minutes from the airport and needing a taxi to go anywhere.
When is the best month for a honeymoon in Koh Samui?
January to April for the driest, calmest sea and the highest prices; May to August for warm, quiet and much cheaper. Avoid late October to December — November in particular is wet here and boat days get cancelled.
How much does a honeymoon week in Koh Samui cost?
Around ฿40 000–53 000 for two for seven nights at a comfortable level, excluding flights, and ฿85 000 and up for a resort trip with a private boat day. Accommodation is what moves the total; everything else is fairly stable.
Can you organise a marriage proposal?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do on the private side. Set-up happens while you are still at sea so the beach looks empty as you land, planning stays on one WhatsApp thread with one person, and a photographer is optional. One to two weeks' notice is ideal.
