Thursday evening in the old part of Maenam village: small, almost entirely Thai, and the cheapest dinner on Samui. Two hundred metres of stalls and no souvenir shop in sight.
The same street holds a morning market from about six o'clock — fish, vegetables, curries sold by the bag — which is the better visit if you are up early. Both are within walking distance of the pier and of Maenam's cheap beachfront guesthouses.
Thursday evening. The morning market next door runs from 6 a.m.
