Samui's airport is a garden with a runway: open-sided terminals, tropical planting, and a buggy train instead of jet bridges. It sits at the north-east corner of the island, thirty minutes by road from anywhere on Samui.
Arrivals come out into an open hall where drivers wait with name boards. There is one runway and no night flights, which is why the last arrivals are in the evening. Domestic and regional flights dominate; connections mostly run through Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Kuala Lumpur.
We meet arrivals in the hall with a name board; transfers are per vehicle.
Taxi fares from the airport rank are fixed and high. A pre-booked transfer is usually cheaper and is priced per vehicle rather than per person.
